When they were first available, some thought them cheap ways out of supplying cards, but as personal messages were added they began to gain acceptance.Sure, it’s a happy time, but everyone knows that this is the time that you’re supposed to buy gifts for everyone on your list. What if your list is long, however? What if there are so many people in your life, so many people to buy for, that you just can’t fathom spending all that money. You don’t want to leave anyone out, however, because you don’t want their feelings to get hurt.

Way back in 1979 when I was, well… younger, there was a Bell Telephone commercial that debuted on Late Night with Johnny Carson. The tagline was, ‘Reach out and touch someone.’ It encouraged you to pick up the phone and spend some money calling someone. If you are under 30, there was once a time you had to pick up a phone because it was tethered to something by another antique called a phone cord. There was also a charge for calls made long distance; there was no unlimited plan, because the only phone we recognize now – a cell phone – wouldn’t arrive for another 30 years.
